Stay Connected Without Roaming: Travel Smarter with an eSIM

The Real Traveler giving tips on how to travel better with an eSIM.
We love to get an eSIM because it is fast, easy, and budget-friendly—IT is a smart way to stay connected while you travel.

An eSIM is a digital SIM you install on your phone to get data without a physical card. You connect to mobile data by scanning a QR code or downloading it to your phone.

We love using an eSIM, as it makes traveling so much easier. You don’t need to go to a shop or buy a plastic SIM card—it’s all digital and can be set up in just a few minutes from your phone. Getting an eSim is more sustainable since there’s no plastic waste. You will not need to swap or maybe lose your home country’s sim card. It helps you save money, because you can avoid expensive roaming charges and only pay for the data you really need. It is also can be cheaper than buying a local sim-card. In some countries, e.g. India, it can also get quit difficult to arrange a local SIM card as a foreigner, as you need to find a store that offers the registration service and have to give a lot of personal details without the guarantee that it actually works out in the end.

You can choose a plan online before you leave your home country, so you're ready to go as soon as you land. We try to be safe and book an online ride from the airport and know exactly where the driver is taking us. You will need data or an offline map to be able to do so. In case of an emergency you will also need a carrier to call.

Which is the Best eSIM Provider?

In our experience Saily has the best deals. We  have been using it during our travels as it is convenient and cheaper than buying SIM-cards. We always compare with other providers to find the best deals that fit our usage and price. We also have had great experiences with Airalo, which is a well-known eSIM provider that covers more than 200 countries. They do have a bigger selection of providers and network coverage.

Our Recommendation

We advice you to buy your eSim on the day that you will arrive or a day before. Some airports don’t have a free Wi-Fi or even Wi-Fi available, if you think you can buy an eSim as soon as you arrive it might not always be possible. We have made this mistake before and it has made our life complicated. You will need a stable Wi-Fi connection or data to buy an eSim.

Tips to Save More on eSIMS

  • Unless you will be traveling to different countries within a short period of time, global or regional eSims are more expensive. It is better to buy one eSim per country, but you can always compare and find what suits you the best.

  • Check which apps on your phone have access to your data and limit accordingly. We have had unpleasant surprises with our data usage and had to buy an eSim again. You might need data access for the following apps: Google Maps, Google and WhatsApp. You can limit access to: Instagram or TikTok.

  • Know your current data usage and track constantly.

  • Use offline Maps, download languages on Google Translate previously, to minimize data usage.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Check compatibility to your phone. Not all countries, phones and carriers allow you to install an eSim. Do your research before buying.

  • Sim cards sold at airports are more expensive than outside. We normally take Uber from the airports, without an eSim this will be difficult. You will need to rely on the Wi-Fi from the airport. You normally can buy physical sim-card at stores for a more accessible price.

  • Check the roaming prices from your home carrier before leaving your home country. Relying on roaming is normally too expensive.
