Things You Can Do to Travel More Responsibly

Traveling is more than just ticking places off a list, it shapes the world we explore. The way we move, spend, and connect can harm or help the places we love.

When we started traveling full-time, we quickly realized that how we travel matters just as much as where we go. After visiting more than 45 countries, we’ve seen both the good and the bad sides of tourism. From plastic-filled beaches to overcrowded temples, it made us think about the impact we leave behind. The good news? Every choice you make can help protect the environment, support local people, and keep destinations beautiful for years to come. Small choices really do make a difference. Traveling responsibly doesn’t mean giving up comfort or fun, it just means being more mindful. Here are some simple ways we try to travel in a way that’s kinder to the planet and the people we meet along the way.

Choose Sustainable Transportation

Transportation plays one of the biggest roles in how sustainable your trip really is. Whenever possible, take trains, buses, or shared rides instead of flying. Sometimes flying is unavoidable, but you can still pick direct routes and consider offsetting your carbon emissions. For shorter distances, walking or cycling is both eco-friendly and a great way to see a destination.

Stay in Eco-Friendly Accommodation

Where you choose to stay can make a big difference in how your trip impacts the environment and the local community. Many hotels, guesthouses, and hostels now follow eco-friendly practices like using renewable energy, limiting water waste, or reducing single-use plastics. Some also make an effort to employ local staff, source food from nearby farms, or give back to community projects. By choosing these kinds of places, you’re not only reducing your footprint but also helping the destination thrive. And if the place is locally owned, even better — your money stays in the community instead of going to a big overseas chain.

Support Local Businesses

One of the best parts of traveling is meeting locals and tasting their food. Eat at family-owned restaurants, shop at local markets, and book tours with local guides. This way, your money stays in the community and supports the people who make your trip possible. For example, in India and Thailand, we joined cooking classes hosted by a family in their home – the money went straight to them. Avoid always choosing big chain restaurants or hotels where most of the profit leaves the community.

Reduce Plastic and Waste

We’ve seen beautiful beaches ruined by piles of plastic bottles. In many countries, there’s no proper recycling system, so trash ends up in rivers and the ocean. We always carry our own reusable water bottles, utensils, and sometimes a lunchbox. Say no to single-use plastics and be mindful of your waste. Don’t grab single-use straws or plastic bags out of convenience. It feels easy in the moment but adds to the problem.

TIP | Bring a reusable water bottle and utensils & ask vendors if you can use your own container. We often use water refill stations in hostels or cafes.

Be Mindful with Wildlife

It can be exciting to see monkeys, elephants, or even street dogs while traveling, but it’s important to treat them with respect. Don’t feed animals human food, since it can make them sick or dependent on tourists. Avoid attractions that let you ride, touch, or take selfies with wild animals. Instead, support ethical sanctuaries or go on guided tours that keep a safe distance. This way, you enjoy the experience without harming the animals.

Travel Slow

We used to rush from one city to another, but we’ve realized slower travel is not only less stressful but also more sustainable. Instead of rushing through ten cities in a week, spend more time in one place. Slow travel reduces transport emissions and allows for deeper cultural experiences.

Protect Nature

We’ve been to places where tourists climb over fragile ruins or leave trash on hiking trails. It’s painful to see. Stick to marked trails, don’t litter, and never take shells, sand, or stones as souvenirs. Leave nature as you found it for the next traveler to enjoy.
